The North Suburban Conference has named its 2012 all-conference baseball team. Mundelein, which beat Vernon Hills in the NSC title game, had a team-high six first-team selections: Will Farmer (Jr., SS), Matt Langlie (Sr., P), Jared Mandel (Sr., P)., Chris Maranto (Sr., 2B), Tor Randau (Sr., OF) and Jordan Wiegold (Sr., C). Carmel Catholic sophomore pitcher Nicole Bitter tossed a one-hit gem, and the result was a 2-0 shutout win — and an IHSA Class 4A regional softball championship for the host Corsairs — over visiting Mundelein, Saturday. It was Carmel’s first regional varsity softball title since 2007, and just the second in school history. Bitter, who allowed three walks and struck out nine, was in control all game. Vada Murray proved herself at the IESA state track and field meet. The Lake Zurich North seventh-grader earned the third-place medal in the Class AA 100 hurdles (16.68) in action held recently in East Peoria. Teammate Emily Little finished in a tie for ninth place in the high jump (4-6). In boys competition, LZ North’s 4x200 relay team placed ninth in the Class AA seventh-grade division (1:46.51). Celebrated soccer player Arne Friedrich will be in the house. Friedrich, who played for the German National Team which took third in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, is scheduled to make an appearance at Schwaben Club Open house tonight. Friedrich made 82 appearances with the German National team and also was on the team when they placed second in the Euro Cup in 2008. He currently is playing for Chicago Fire. Lake Zurich High School senior Kaeley Ferguson came up just short of qualifying for the unofficial indoor state meet in the triple jump. “She sat right at the pit and watched the triple jumpers and hoped she would see them at the outdoor state meet,” Bears coach Lance Pacernick said. So at the Class 3A IHSA Sectional at Grayslake North last Thursday, Ferguson did not care exactly how far she jumped as long as she would advance to the state meet. In the game of soccer — perhaps more than any other sport — underclassmen often have the opportunity to contribute significantly at the varsity level. Lake Zurich freshman goalkeeper Elanor Daleske is a shining example. Just a week following her epic shutout victory in the longest North Suburban Conference title game in history, against Vernon Hills, the magnitude of her accomplishment is still fully sinking in.
