Exploring careers
Girls in seventh- through 12th-grade who want to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and math are invited to the College of Lake County’s third annual STEM event (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) on Feb. 23. The free, hands-on career exploration workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the C Wing Conference Center at 19351 W. Washington Street, Grayslake.
The free event is designed for school groups, scout groups, youth groups and individual girls. This active learning event will feature fun hands-on science, technology, engineering and math sessions; informative career advice from successful women and men scientists and engineers; presentations on lunar exploration, materials science, ecology, sustainability, lasers and more. The event also includes a light breakfast and lunch, a mini college fair by four-year universities and a mini science “exploratorium” where participants can conduct experiments. Presenters include CLC faculty as well as Chicago-area women engineers, scientists and naturalists.
Parents are also welcome to attend. They can participate in a workshop, learn how to encourage their daughters to study STEM fields, experience hands-on activities they can repeat at home, explore the mini college fair and learn about STEM programs at CLC.

Would you like to learn more about the College of Lake County just by visiting your neighborhood library?
Staff members from CLC Enrollment Services will visit area libraries this spring to answer questions about CLC’s academic programs and the enrollment process. The events are designed to assist adults who are thinking about returning to college or changing careers as well as current high school students.
A representative will be available at the following public libraries on the following dates:

Strategies for success
“Next Generation Manufacturing: Competitive Strategies for Success,” a three-part workshop series, will be presented by Client Solutions, part of the Workforce and Professional Development Institute (WPDI) of the College of Lake County.
The workshops will be held Feb. 22, April 26 and June 14 and will focus on innovation, sustainability and continual improvement for the manufacturer. The series is being offered in partnership with Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC). The workshops will be held on Fridays at CLC’s Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Feb. 22: Lean Product Development: Innovating the Process. This session introduces companies to the basic concepts of Lean product development and how it can help reduce time to market, startup costs and manufacturing costs.

Lunchtime seminar
The benefits of locally grown food, the College of Lake County’s growing campus farm and season-extension techniques such as hoop houses will be covered in a free lunchtime seminar to be held from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 in Room A217 at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
The presenter will be Gianna Fazioli, local foods coordinator at CLC. Among her duties, Fazioli has helped coordinate the college’s efforts to provide vegetables and herbs, grown on the Grayslake campus, for the college’s new Prairie restaurant that opened last September.
The 2007 Illinois Local Food, Farms and Jobs Act calls for a statewide goal of having 20 percent of Illinois’ food grown, processed and distributed within the state by the year 2020, according to Fazioli. Her talk will cover the college’s effort to help organizations meet the state’s goal. These efforts include the training of local farmers in the college’s new degree and certificate program in sustainable agriculture. Fazioli also will briefly explain community gardens and season-extension techniques such as hoop houses, which are garden greenhouses that lengthen the growing season.
No RSVP is required, and no lunch is served. Participants are invited to bring their own lunch. The seminar is organized by the college’s faculty/staff Environmental Action Committee.
College expo
How can high school students and their parents learn about nearly 150 colleges and universities in just one location? The Illinois College Exposition, hosted by the College of Lake County from 6-8 p.m. March 12, is a great place for families to begin or continue the college search process.
The expo will be held in the Physical Education Center, Building 7, on the CLC Grayslake campus. Parking is available in lots 2 or 3, on the north side of the CLC campus, closest to the Washington Street and Lancer Lane entrance.
College financial aid information sessions will be held in room 706 of the Physical Education Center from 6:30-7 p.m. and 7:15-7:45 p.m.
The event is being sponsored by the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling and is intended for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. Representatives from colleges and universities in Illinois and across the United States will provide information about admission to their institutions. The armed forces also will be represented.

Academic challenge winners
More than 120 students from eight area high schools competed in the annual Academic Challenge competition, held Feb. 9 at the College of Lake County. The regional competition pitted the area’s brightest students against each other in academic tests covering seven academic areas.
The first and second place finishers in each category and the top two teams from each division will advance to the North Chicago Sectional Competition, to be held March 8 at Vernon Hills High School. The Academic Challenge was sponsored by CLC Engineering, Math and Physical Sciences division and the University of Illinois College of Engineering’s Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) program.
Medalist awards were presented to the individual on each of the seven teams with the highest total standardized score for their team. Medalists were Maggie Carvill (Carmel Catholic High School), Lauren Smith (Deerfield High School), Albert Yang (Grayslake Central High School), Sarah Ditton (Lake Zurich High School), Tim Li (Libertyville High School), Justin Yim (Vernon Hills High School) and Jack Weber (Wauconda High School).
The high schools were divided into two divisions, schools with fewer than 1,500 students and those with more than 1,500 students (unlimited). In the 1,500 division, the top three teams were: 1st place: Vernon Hills, 2nd place: Wauconda and 3rd place: Carmel Catholic. In the unlimited schools division (over 1,500), the top schools were 1st place: Deerfield, 2nd place: Libertyville, and 3rd place: Lake Zurich.

Biology winners: Sarah M. Ditton (Lake Zurich) in 1st, Lauren Smith (Deerfield) in 2nd, and Max Feinberg (Deerfield) in 3rd.
Chemistry winners: Parker N. Brown (Lake Zurich) in 1st, Sarah M. Ditton (Lake Zurich) and Ryan Grunnow (Lake Zurich) in a tie for 2nd, and Ted Culbertson (Deerfield), Eric Klein (Libertyville) Eric D. Peet (Lake Zurich) and Danny Schwartz (Deerfield) in a tie for 3rd.
Computer Science winners: Michael Malis (Deerfield) in 1st, Ricky Bernstein (Deerfield) in 2nd, and Tim Li (Libertyville) in 3rd.
Engineering Graphics winners: Ethan Dlugie (Deerfield) and Ryan P. Thorne (Lake Zurich) in a tie for 1st, Amy Yi (Deerfield) in 2nd, Michael A. Brenner (Lake Zurich) and Max Feinberg (Deerfield) in a tie for 3rd.
English winners: Alura Chung-Mehdi (Lake Zurich) – 1st, Richard Pan (Libertyville) – 2nd and Lauren Smith (Deerfield) – 3rd.
Math winners: Tim Li (Libertyville) in 1st, Kevin Wilson (Deerfield) in 2nd and Ethan Dlugie (Deerfield) in 3rd.
Physics winners: Kevin Wilson (Deerfield) in 1st, Danny Schwartz (Deerfield) in 2nd and Daniel Hartung (Libertyville) in 3rd.
Division 1,500 Individual Results:
Biology winners: Justin Yim (Vernon Hills) in 1st, Micaela Kulvaranon (Vernon Hills) in 2nd, and Albert F. Yang (Grayslake Central) in 3rd.
Chemistry winners: Alex Revinski (Vernon Hills) in 1st, Micaela Kulvaranon (Vernon Hills), Kelvin Wang (Vernon Hills) and Jack Weber (Wauconda) in a tie for 2nd, and Albert F. Yang (Grayslake Central) in 3rd.
Computer Science winners: Jack Nachman (Wauconda) in 1st, Emily Meng (Vernon Hills) in 2nd, and Corey Pitzo (Carmel Catholic) in 3rd.

The top two students from each subject in each division advance to the sectional competition at Vernon Hills High School on March 8. The top two teams from each division also advance.
The teams were coached by Joshua Ravenscraft and Shannon Etnyre (Vernon Hills), Dave Schmitz (Wauconda), Martin Esgar and Michael Hinton (Deerfield), Debra J. Hofer (Grayslake Central), Anne Hopkins (Lake Zurich) and Peter Dawson (Libertyville).
Two CLC faculty members, Rob Twardock (engineering transfer) and Dr. Ana Mazilu (Physics) served as coordinators for the competition, which is held annually at the college.
“Each year we consistently get comments from team coaches that CLC’s regional competition is one of the best academic competitions they attend,” Twardock said.
