LAKE ZURICH — The difficulty in finding a treadmill at the gym in January can be reason enough to choose a different New Year’s resolution.
Andrew Gordon, owner of Lake Zurich-based Gordon Law Group, offers another option: tax advice for those hoping to enjoy a more fiscally responsible start to 2013.
The Lake Zurich resident explained that taxpayers can maximize deductions by organizing tax-related records and opening a home office. For those unable to pay their taxes, Gordon advised filing a tax return anyway. If not, the Internal Revenue Service may assess a separate penalty for not filing at all, he explained.
These are only a few of the steps Gordon said taxpayers tend to overlook when filing — or not filing at all.
Noting that everyone’s situation is different, Gordon is offering free consultations at his new Lake Zurich office, Suite 207 in First Bank Plaza, at the corner of Route 22 and Rand Road.
Gordon credited his former position as a law clerk at the IRS for allowing him to efficiently and effectively help taxpayers address their tax issues. He recommends that taxpayers who have received mail from the IRS do not contact its officials directly. To avoid further issues with the IRS, Gordon advises that the task should instead be handled by a licensed tax attorney.
Gordon Law Group also practices business law, and provides counsel and legal representation in lawsuits to businesses if they have been wronged by another business or partner.
Having grown up in Buffalo Grove with family in Lake Zurich, Gordon has long been familiar with the area in which his practice services.
“I set out to take the skills of the large, expensive firms in Chicago and make those services more accessible to people in the suburbs,” Gordon said.
Though it may sound as if Gordon has practiced tax law and accounting for more than 20 years, the certified public accountant and tax attorney is only 25. He graduated from Chicago Kent College of Law last year with experience already under his belt working as a law clerk at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Before that, he worked at a clinic to help low-income taxpayers file their taxes.
After working at the IRS, he became a partner at a small accounting firm, but left to start Gordon Law Group when he saw a need for more tax attorneys in the area.
“I found that a lot of people weren’t getting tax help just because they couldn’t afford it, so I started my firm to make it easier for people to afford,” Gordon said.
