Lake Zurich High School grad completes engineering assignment in Africa

LAKE ZURICH — Lake Zurich High School graduate John Gage completed a 12-week internship over the summer at Greeley and Hansen, a civil engineering firm in Chicago.

Earlier this fall, Gage returned to classes at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with professional engineering experience from working on a diverse range of projects and assignments.

During the internship, Gage spent time abroad in Sierra Leone, where he helped build a clean water well for a village. Greeley and Hansen specialize in practical engineering, architectural and management solutions for water and infrastructure challenges.

Gage, who graduated from LZHS in 2008, is on pace to graduate with a master’s degree from the University of Illinois next May.

Q: What about Lake Zurich makes you proud?

A: I loved it. The community was awesome.”

Q: If you were mayor for the day, what would you do?

A: Institute an awareness day to promote and raise money for nonprofit organizations.

Q: What inspired you to go into civil engineering?

A: I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to help people.

Q: What got you interested in engineering?

A: Seeing countries affected by water crises. I wanted to do something about it.

Q: What are your future career or volunteering goals?

A: I want to spend a couple months working with a nonprofit. Then, I plan on working at a consulting firm.

Q: What is your proudest moment or greatest achievement?

A: I was on a champion football team at Lake Zurich High School. It was cool to be able to see a whole town rally around the team.

Q: What are you reading?

A: “The Pleasures of God” by John Piper

Q: What is your favorite movie?

A: “Shawshank Redemption”

Q: What’s on your iPod?

A: A little bit of everything, but I tend to stay away from folk and metal.

Q: What’s your favorite vacation destination?

A: A log cabin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Q: Are you a summer or winter person?

A: I’ve been slowly changing from a winter to a summer person.

Q: What is your favorite Chicago sports team?

A: The Bears
