Lake Zurich plans additional mosquito spraying

LAKE ZURICH — In response to recent cases of West Nile Virus reported in Lake County, the Village of Lake Zurich has approved additional rounds of mosquito spraying.
Lake Zurich officials reported that the first spraying, scheduled for Tuesday (Sept. 11), will use a slightly different approach than the village’s typical application.
David Heyden, Lake Zurich’s director of public works, said the technique used this was planned to be an adulticide method, in which the air is sprayed to kill adult mosquitoes. The larvicide method, in which pools of standing water are targeted, is designed to kill mosquitoes while they are still in their larvae stage. The larvicide method is used throughout the summer in Lake Zurich.
“The second application will be on an as-needed basis depending on weather,” said Heyden, explaining that the second application, also an adulticide approach, will take place only if the weather stays warm and humid.
“We have a regular spraying program that’s been going on for years,” added Village President Suzanne Branding. “This is in addition to that.”
Lake Zurich’s mosquito control program begins in May every year. During a typical summer, more than 280 acres are treated using the lavicide method. Within that area, 81 acres are targeted every month through helicopter larvicide applications.
Inspections for larval mosquitoes also are conducted by taking water samples at specific breeding sites like retention ponds, drainage ditches and wetlands. The data is then tracked to determine which sites show breeding so additional treatments can be applied accordingly.
The village inspections typically continue through September.
