Alarm helps save Kildeer home

KILDEER — Local fire officials are crediting a residential fire alarm for saving the majority of a Kildeer family’s home as well as the lives of their three pets.
The Lake Zurich Fire/Rescue Department responded to the fire alarm shortly after 2 p.m. Aug. 8 and arrived five minutes later at the home, 21801 Cambridge Drive, Kildeer. Fire officials arrived to smoke stains on the home’s garage and found the door “hot to the touch.”
Firefighters forced their way into the garage, fire officials said, where they encountered heavy smoke. The first responders began applying water to the fire and the flames were reported under control at 2:40 p.m.
“It came in as a true fire alarm from an alarm monitoring service they have in the home,” said Fire Chief David Wheelock of the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.
He said the home’s private alarm system helped “minimize” the damage.
While nobody was home at the time of the fire, Wheelock said fire officials were able to safely remove the family’s three dogs from the house.
“Damage to the garage was pretty substantial,” Wheelock said. “It’s not gutted, but they’ll have to redo everything inside the garage. There was smoke damage in the house, but not very much because all the doors were closed.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire departments from Wauconda, Barrington, Long Grove, Countryside, Lincolnshire, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, Palatine, Cary, Deerfield, Libertyville, Lake Villa and Mount Prospect assisted in containing the blaze.
